In August 2011, Bear Smart Durango Executive Director Bryan Peterson was invited to assist the National Park Service in a non-invasive black and grizzly bear study in Kobuk Valley National Park, above the Arctic Circle in Northwest Alaska. The goal of the study was to determine habitat use by species of bear and to pre-empt human-bear conflict in the park. Using specially-trained working dogs the group collected over 150 bear scat samples… and experienced much of what only remote Alaska can offer.
