GAME DAMAGE CLAIMS IN AREA 15
Area 15 of Colorado Parks and Wildlife is comprised of two Bear Data Analysis Units, (or DAU’s), that split La Plata County in half: DAU B-6 and DAU B-18.
DAU B-6: Game damage claims have averaged 8 per year for the last 10 years. The highest number of claims were for bear depredation on sheep and cattle followed by damage to beehives. Source: Colorado Parks and Wildlife
DAU B-18: Game damage claims have averaged 7 per year for the last 10 years. Sheep were the most common claim (44%) followed by goats (22%) and cattle (11%). The majority of the claims have been in GMU 75 (52%), which is the only unit in the DAU that has domestic sheep grazing on US Forest Service lands which is a factor to the proportionally higher number of game damage claims in it.
